Carnelian (or corneol) is a reddish brown mineral commonly used as a semi-precious stone. A similar stone to carnelian is sardium, which is usually harder and darker (the difference between them is not great and often carnelian and sardium are identified). It got its name from the Latin ending "cara" meaning flesh, because of its colour. In the Egyptian "Bible of the Dead" it is referred to as a powerful gem that protects against evil eye and all kinds of negative influences. It is referred to as one of the gems carried by the great High Priest of Israel (named Sardis). The Indians called it "Rajari Mohara" (rat=night, jari=pyretic, mohara=gem). The Arabs believed that if one engraved the name of Allah on a Carnelian, one would become fearless. While if a woman held it, she would have an easy pregnancy and childbirth. In the 18th century it was believed to bring good luck, protection and prosperity. A strange property acributed to the carnelian is that it protects the wearer from falling walls and ceilings. Muhammad and Napoleon are said to have always carried amulets of Carnelian on them.
