It belongs to the silicate minerals of the Tectosilicate group. It is a variety of Jasper from Western Australia. Used as a decorative material and for its healing properties, it can be incredibly colorful. Most stones are highly polished. Mookaite is mainly composed of microscopic remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called radiolaria. These organisms had a unique skeletal structure. The scientific name of Mookaite is Windalia Radiolarite. Radiolaria measured 0.1 to 0.2 millimeters and produced complex mineral skeletons. As the ancient oceans receded, they gradually disappeared and their skeletal remains slowly turned into sedimentary rock. Although many varieties of Radiolarite can be found around the world, Windalia can only be found in one location in Australia. Mookaite is a rock and not a mineral. These two materials are not the same. Like most jasper varieties, Mookaite is made up of many different minerals and substances. The beautiful colors in it come mainly from iron and manganese impurities. Along with the precious opal, Mookaite is one of Australia's best-known gemstones. It was formerly used to make seal stones and decorative sculptures for the rich and noble.
