Petrified Wood

Petrified wood is a type of fossil whose original woody form has turned, over millions of years, into stone. Fossil wood usually includes fossilized remains of land vegetation, such as e.g. roots, trunks, bark, branches and leaves. This "wood" is essentially the result of a phenomenon called petrification or petrification, i.e. a complex and extremely time-consuming chemical process, where organic cellulosic matter is flattened, compressed under high pressure and combined with the complete replacement of organic matter, molecule with molecule (cell-to-cell), from silicon dioxide and other silicate or non-silicate materials. In this environment over millions of years, the organic molecules of wood are anoxically replaced by silicon dioxide, which eventually leads to fossilization. In Greece, the most important point of reference for such fossils is the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. The formation of the petrified forest is related to the intense volcanic activity that took place on Lesvos, 20 million years ago. This activity created, in addition to lava, pyroclastic materials and volcanic ash, consequently covering the flora in the area. This coverage resulted in the isolation of the organic materials of the flora from the atmosphere. Often the petrified wood is intertwined with findings of whole trees or their trunks, which were crushed either due to seismic disturbances, in earlier times, or due to the lava that covered them from volcanic eruptions that took place, usually in areas of valleys or river deltas. As a result of these, the finds that come to light typically bear the name, petrified forest.
