It owes its name to the ancient Greek word "rodochrous", which characterizes its color. It belongs to the calcite group (carbonates), with which it has several similarities. It occurs in hydrothermal veins often with other manganese minerals but also galena, sphalerite, Ferro pyrite, calcite and quartz. Its other occurrences are in metamorphic formations along with garnet and rhodonite), with which it is often confused. It is mainly found in the USA (Colorado and Utah), Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada, Peru, Argentina, Mexico, in Greece it is found in Madem Lakko (Barracks of Halkidiki), in Romania (silver mining) (Harts Mountains, Transylvanian Alps), where it was first detected, and in South Africa. It is mainly used as a decorative material and in jewelry (semi-precious stone).
